<div><h2>AI Resistance Framed as Religious Accommodation</h2>Recent reporting highlights an emerging workplace issue: employees seeking religious accommodations to avoid using artificial intelligence tools. In <a href="https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/religious-exemption-ai-work" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">one widely cited example</a>, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worker-got-religious-exemption-using-ai-at-work-2026-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">North Carolina software engineer secured an exemption</a> from her employer after asserting that AI use conflicted with her sincerely held religious beliefs, which were grounded in ethical and environmental concerns. <a href="https://news.bloomberglaw.com/daily-labor-report/ai-religious-objections-at-work-emerge-as-new-employer-concern" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Commentators anticipate</a> that such requests will increase as employers formalize AI usage expectations and as religious leaders raise concerns about AI’s impact on human dignity, creating a new compliance challenge for employers.&nbsp;From a legal standpoint, these requests are governed primarily by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VII applies to employers with at least 15 employees and requires them to reasonably accommodate an employee’s sincerely held religious beliefs unless doing so would impose an undue hardship on the business. The statute defines religion broadly to include not only traditional organized faiths but also individualized, nontraditional, or newly adopted moral or ethical beliefs held with the force of religion. As such, objections to AI use—if framed as religious rather than merely philosophical or political—may qualify for protection.&nbsp;Employers are permitted to assess whether a belief is sincerely held, but they may not evaluate the legitimacy, logic, or popularity of the belief itself. Courts and <a href="https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/what-you-should-know-workplace-religious-accommodation" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the EEOC</a> generally require only a limited inquiry into sincerity, and even beliefs that are inconsistent or not supported by formal doctrine may still be protected. This relatively low threshold is significant in the AI context, where employees may articulate objections based on evolving ethical or theological concerns about automation.&nbsp;At the state level, North Carolina largely defers to federal law for private employers. Title VII therefore provides the primary framework for religious accommodation claims, with state law offering limited additional protections. As a result, employers in North Carolina and similarly situated jurisdictions should focus their analysis on federal standards when evaluating AI-related accommodation requests.&nbsp;When faced with these requests, employers should engage in a structured, interactive process with the employee to identify possible accommodations, such as allowing manual processes, redistributing AI-dependent tasks, or modifying performance expectations. Employers should also carefully document their analysis, as failure to meaningfully consider an accommodation request may expose them to liability for discrimination, failure to accommodate, or retaliation. Given the heightened legal standard and the expanding role of AI in the workplace, employers should expect increased scrutiny of blanket AI mandates and should consider proactively updating policies to address religious accommodation scenarios.&nbsp;Requests for religious exemptions from AI use highlight the intersection of emerging workplace technology and longstanding anti-discrimination law.
